Accessible Airport Transport to DIA: Your Complete NEMT Guide

Traveling by air with a wheelchair, power chair, or mobility device requires more planning than a standard trip to the airport. The right ground transport makes all the difference — arriving calm, on time, and with your equipment secured properly.

At N.E.M.T. Medical Mobility, we are based at Pena Station — right at Denver International Airport — and we have been providing accessible airport transport since 2000. Here is everything you need to know.

Why Standard Rideshares Do Not Work for Wheelchair Users

Uber, Lyft, and standard taxis are not equipped for passengers who use wheelchairs or power chairs. Even services that advertise "accessible" options often mean a vehicle with extra trunk space — not a vehicle with a ramp, securement system, and trained driver.

The problems with standard rideshares for wheelchair users:

  • No ramp or lift: You must transfer out of your wheelchair
  • No securement: Your chair cannot be safely stowed
  • Untrained drivers: No experience with mobility equipment
  • Inconsistent availability: Accessible vehicles are rare and often unavailable
  • No door-to-door service: Drivers do not assist with loading or unloading

For a medical transport patient heading to DIA for a flight, these are not acceptable risks.

What N.E.M.T. Medical Mobility Provides for Airport Transport

Our airport transport service is designed specifically for passengers with mobility needs:

Door-to-Door Service

We pick you up at your home, care facility, or hotel — not at a curb. Our drivers come to your door, assist with loading, secure your wheelchair or mobility device, and escort you to the terminal.

Hand-to-Hand Service

For passengers who need extra assistance, we provide hand-to-hand service — meaning we stay with you until you are in the care of airline staff or a family member at the terminal.

All Mobility Equipment Accommodated

  • Manual wheelchairs
  • Power wheelchairs
  • Bariatric wheelchairs
  • Stretchers and reclining chairs
  • Scooters and other mobility devices

24/7 Availability

Flights do not keep business hours. Neither do we. We provide airport transport 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year — including early morning departures and late-night arrivals.

Denver International Airport: What You Need to Know

DIA is one of the largest airports in the world by land area, and navigating it with a mobility device requires planning.

Terminal Layout

DIA has one main terminal (Jeppesen Terminal) and three concourses:

  • Concourse A: Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines
  • Concourse B: American, Delta, United, international carriers
  • Concourse C: Alaska, Southwest, JSX

Concourses are connected to the main terminal via an underground train — fully accessible with elevators at every station.

Airline Accessibility Services

Every airline at DIA is required to provide wheelchair assistance from check-in to the gate at no charge. When booking your flight, request wheelchair assistance and specify your mobility needs. This is separate from your ground transport — N.E.M.T. Medical Mobility handles the ground portion, and the airline handles the airport portion.

TSA Accessibility

TSA has specific screening procedures for passengers with disabilities and medical devices. You can request a TSA Cares assistance call at 1-855-787-2227 before your flight to arrange additional support.

How to Book Airport Transport With N.E.M.T. Medical Mobility

Booking is straightforward. Here is what you need:

  1. Call us at 720-210-0058
  2. Provide your flight details: Date, departure time, airline, and terminal
  3. Give your pickup address: Home, care facility, or hotel
  4. Describe your mobility equipment: Type of wheelchair, any special requirements
  5. Note any additional needs: Stretcher transport, bariatric equipment, oxygen equipment

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance for airport transport. This allows us to confirm the vehicle, driver, and any special equipment needed.

For same-day bookings, call us as early as possible — we do our best to accommodate urgent requests.

How Early Should You Leave for the Airport?

For passengers using wheelchair transport, we recommend arriving at DIA at least 2.5 to 3 hours before domestic flights and 3.5 hours before international flights. This accounts for:

  • Loading and securing your mobility device
  • Check-in and baggage drop
  • TSA screening (which takes longer for mobility device users)
  • Travel to your concourse via the underground train
  • Boarding (wheelchair users typically board first)

Returning From DIA: Arrival Transport

We also provide transport from DIA back to your home, care facility, or hotel after your flight.

For arrival transport:

  • Book in advance with your flight number so we can track delays
  • We monitor your flight and adjust pickup time if your flight is delayed
  • Meet your driver at the accessible ground transportation area on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal

Colorado Springs and Casper Airport Transport

In addition to DIA, N.E.M.T. Medical Mobility provides accessible airport transport to:

  • Colorado Springs Airport (COS): Serving the Pikes Peak region and southern Colorado
  • Casper/Natrona County Airport (CPR): Serving central Wyoming

Call us to discuss transport to these airports — we serve the full tri-state region.

Tips for Flying With a Wheelchair or Power Chair

Before Your Flight

  • Notify your airline of your wheelchair type and battery specifications (for power chairs)
  • Label your wheelchair with your name, contact information, and destination
  • Remove and carry on any detachable parts that could be damaged in the cargo hold
  • Take photos of your wheelchair before checking it at the gate

At the Airport

  • Request gate-check for your wheelchair — it travels in the cargo hold and is returned to you at the jet bridge upon arrival
  • Bring documentation for any medical equipment (oxygen, CPAP, etc.)
  • Allow extra time at TSA — mobility device screening takes longer

On the Plane

  • Confirm your aisle chair needs with the gate agent — airlines provide aisle chairs to assist with boarding
  • Inform the crew of any assistance you need during the flight
